The danish way to live well5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s that feeling you get when you are cuddled up on a sofa with a loved one, in warm knitted socks, in front of the fire, when it’s dark, cold and stormy outside. Hygge is that feeling when you are sharing good, comfort food with your closest friends, by candlelight and exchanging easy conversation. The Danish word hygge is one of those beautiful words that doesn’t directly translate into English, but it more or less means comfort, warmth or togetherness. To paraphrase one of the greatest philosophers of our time – Winne the Pooh – when asked how to spell a certain emotion, “You don’t spell it, you feel it.’ It really isn’t important how you choose to pronounce or even spell hygge. Hygge seems to be the talk of the town these days. Hooga? Hhyooguh? Heurgh? First things first, let’s address the elephant in the room… it’s pronounced ‘hoo-gah’. ![]()

![]() ![]() Someone else has picked up the project of destroying enclaves in my stead, and probably everyone we saved is about to get killed in the brewing enclave war on the horizon. Did it work? As the book blurb can attest, sorta. " Ha, only joking! Actually it's gone all wrong. Instead, it split the Scholomance dimension off this plane, and hopefully all the demons with it. El released her power and a spell that could crack the Earth if she chose to. The Golden Enclaves starts out just as we left off, with El and company having fought a host of maleficaria hell-bent on their destruction. That is, if she chooses to go down that path, which is the crux of the story and her nagging fear. ![]() To quote her namesake the original Galadriel, "Instead of a Dark Lord, you would have a queen, not dark but beautiful and terrible as the dawn! Tempestuous as the sea, and stronger than the foundations of the Earth! All shall love me and despair!" El, could be a dark sorcerous who can make mountains bow before her, and all mothers of the world cry out in weeping anguish. Because while the story has solid side characters, especially in The Golden Enclaves, the journey is that of Galadriel, or El as she likes to be called. What started as a run-of-the-mill dark academia story became a gripping grimdark with a morally gray heroine that you may not like, but you can certainly get behind. The Golden Enclaves and the entire Scholomance series have been a long dark road full of twists and turns. ![]()

Vietnam by Stanley Karnow5/20/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() His history of Ho Chi Minh's is concise and accurate. ![]() On the other hand, Karnow is weakest in his discussion of the North Vietnamese Communist leadership. Again, he is fair, albeit deservedly critical, particularly of Johnson, whose dithering, indecisiveness, and utter incapability of understanding a foreign culture locked the US into taking one misstep after another. Karnow dissects the American failures, especially by the upper echelon, Johnson, Rostow, Acheson, Westmoreland, and later Nixon and Kissinger. Karnow provides a survey of Vietnamese history and the arrival of the French, which serves as a serviceable context for the introduction of American soldiers and politicians into the area in the 1950s and 1960s.įor the most part, this is a balanced and fair book. and Stanley Karnow is the most comprehensive. Neil Sheehan is the most detailed from the perspective of the officers and men fighting the war. David Halberstam is the most ideological engaged. Three major chroniclers of the Vietnam War served as journalists in Vietnam during the period of the war. ![]()

The black count book5/20/2023 ![]() ![]() The Black Count is simultaneously a riveting adventure story, a lushly textured evocation of 18th-century France, and a window into the modern world's first multi-racial society. ![]() ![]() Enlisting as a private, he rose to command armies at the height of the Revolution, in an audacious campaign across Europe and the Middle East until he met an implacable enemy he could not defeat. Yet, hidden behind these swashbuckling adventures was an even more incredible secret: the real hero was the son of a black slave - who rose higher in the white world than any man of his race would before our own time.īorn in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), Alex Dumas was briefly sold into bondage but made his way to Paris where he was schooled as a sword-fighting member of the French aristocracy. The real-life protagonist of The Black Count, General Alex Dumas, is a man almost unknown today yet with a story that is strikingly familiar, because his son, the novelist Alexandre Dumas, used it to create some of the best loved heroes of literature. Here is the remarkable true story of the real Count of Monte Cristo a stunning feat of historical sleuthing that brings to life the forgotten hero who inspired such classics as The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers. ![]()

![]() ![]() She isn’t sure if she can save the kingdom, but she’s sure that if she stays and gets married, her life will change forever. ![]() Rarely do we read fairytales detailing what happens after the princess is rescued, but in Sleeper and the Spindle, we see that Snow White is now a queen and doing the rescuing. One of my favorite elements of the story was the Queen’s journey. Throughout the story, Gaiman plays with the consequences of each choice - and whether these choices come to fruition or not - giving the entire book an air of dream-like wonder. Every word counts in Sleeper and the Spindle, and while this story might be dark, the message is not, as it’s about finding courage in the wake of many expectations.įrom the expectations of what the Queen is meant to become after she wakes from her spell, to the sleeping Princesses in need of rescuing (but maybe not in the way you’d expect), each character is faced with choices. Gaiman is never needlessly gruesome or shocking, but he tells his stories in honest language and earnest characters. ![]() Spinning the fairytales of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, author Neil Gaiman and Illustrator Chris Riddell, combine the two lives into one hero’s, (or rather heroine’s) journey.Īs a long-time fan of Gaiman’s writing, I found this story to be just as delightful and sinister as most of his tales. The Sleeper and the Spindle is a picture book that is as illuminating as it is dark. ![]()

Vox christina dalcher review5/19/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() So, more than the content, I was actually studying the form how did she deal with flashbacks, how did she build the world, how did she interweave the now and the past? That to me was very insightful.” She went on to sum up exactly why I found Vox so disturbing – “I think that women especially will read VOX and think the horrible part is being limited to 100 words a day. You don’t need the whole context to appreciate the beautiful lyricism of her writing. Telling The Bookseller magazine “She writes scenes that almost stand alone, like little slices of a great whole. Originally written as a piece of flash fiction, Dalcher openly admits that Vox was inspired by Atwood’s modern classic. Vox by Christina Dalcher will draw obvious comparisons to The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood both set in a dystopian near-future America where women’s rights are stripped away. Jean McClellan, former leading neurolinguist, specialising in aphasia, the loss of language, is now restricted to speaking just 100 words a day. Today, on The Tattooed Book, I’m reviewing Vox by Christina Dalcher, published by HQ. ![]() |
